Raffle Prizes

The winner gets to chose between two exceptional locals - the potted Mangrove Fern, (above) or a mounted Elkhorn (below). The runner-up takes home the other.

Mangrove Ferns (Astrochicum speciosum) are stunning Coochie natives that you can see growing to about 2 metres in the island's mangrove forest along the western shoreline.

The prize Elkhorn is mounted on a solid wooden round, as are all the Staghorns and Elkhorns the Nursery sells. We'll be bringing them to the Pirate Markets and at $25-$35 each are about half the price you'd pay at commercial nursery. Hooks are attached so they can be fixed to a wall, fence or trellis.

Gardening Australia has great staghorn info and how to care for them.

Dodonaea triquetra (native hop bush) will also be on sale at the Pirate markets You can see these native hop bushes growing along the path through the wetlands. They grow up to three metres to in semi shade or full sun and make good screening plants. They can be tip pruned to keep a bushy shape.

The flowers are tiny, followed by hop like fruits that are a bright lime green when young, turning to purple/ brown as they age. Early settlers are said to have used them in beer making as a hop substitute. Apparently they make a bitter brew!

Display Garden

We are thrilled to have Kennedia rubicunda  (dusky coral pea) flowering in the nursery display garden now.  Our specimens were propagated from seeds gathered from the edge of the wetlands in Innes St. Once our Kennedia set seed we will propagate some for sale and for bush regeneration. Kennedia rubicunda makes a good ground cover or climber in either sun or semi-shade and is very hardy once established.
